1st Corinthians 10

“Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1st Corinthians 10:11-13

In the text today, Paul begins by sharing examples of the ancient past, the people of Israel, whom God freed from Egyptian captivity through Moses. During their newfound freedom, the people dishonored God with their lives. They complained about what God was doing in the world. They adopted the customs of other peoples rather than living out the Lord’s directions. Their selfish pursuits and ungrateful natures were costly. An entire generation of Israel was left to wander in the desert wilderness before God led them into His promised land to settle.

Much like those Israelites who experienced new freedom from Egypt, when you or I believe in Jesus through faith, we are set free from sin. Only by our own choice are we bound again to the destructiveness of sin. In short, we prefer the trouble, tension and temptation over freedom and peace. Jesus tells all who would consider following him, “If you love me, keep my commands.” John 14:15

Paul reminds us, that the greatest life we can possibly know and experience, is within our grasps. Yet, most of us will feel the weight of being overcome by everything else. The powerful words of 1st Corinthians 10:11-13 provide strength and opportunity to move forward—we all face temptations and we can overcome them together through Christ who loves us most.

Through his death and resurrection, Jesus made a way over all sin. Through the Spirit and through the Word we have daily support and direction to avoid temptation. Because we have been freed by Jesus, we don’t have to live trapped by sin and temptation!
